GCSE GEOGRAPHY
Geography GCSE is a popular option subject at KS4 with 4 lessons per fortnight and 2 days fieldwork. The subject is taught in 3 independent units over the 2 years.
Unit 1 (Mr Owen): Section A: Core Themes – Two structured, data response questions assessing Core Theme 1 (Landscapes and Physical Processes) and Core Theme 2 (Rural-urban Links). Section B: Options – One structured question assessing Theme 3 (Tectonic Landscapes and Hazards).
Unit 2 (Mr Brown): Section A: Core Themes – Two structured, data response questions assessing Core Theme 5 (Weather, Climate and Ecosystems) and Core Theme 6 (Development and Resource Issues). Section B: Options – One structured question assessing Theme 8 (Environmental Challenges).
Unit 3 (Mr Brown): Fieldwork Unit. One day carrying out a survey on the River Clywedog and One day in Chester City Centre is followed by 9 hours of preparation time for the NEA (Non-Exam Assessment).
You will be assessed by a 2.5 hour non-exam assessment in November of year 11 worth 20% and two 1.5 hour examinations in the following Summer worth 40% each.

Revision classes for the Summer Examinations run on a Tuesday and Thursday evening in the GEOGRAPHY DEPARTMENT from 3pm until 4pm from December onwards. ALL WELCOME.
What will you learn about in KS3 GEOGRAPHY?
Students in year 7 will have 1 lesson per week and students in years 8 and 9 will have 3 lessons over a two week period. In the lessons, students will discover and learn a huge variety of engaging and relevant topics based around 3 Big Questions:
Year 7:
– How can we find our Cyneffin?
– What drives change from the core to the clouds?
– Can you be the wave of change?
Year 8:
– What caused the rise and fall of the population in Japan?
– What drives connections and conflict around the world?
– Humans Vs The Planet: Can there be a winner?
Year 9:
– Can Development exist without Exploitation?
– Should the global free movement of people be encouraged?
– ‘Africa is not a country!’: How are the 54 African countries unique?
What extra-curricular opportunities are there?
ALL STUDENTS will have the opportunity to take part in the SCHOOL ECO-TASKFORCE and join the BEE TEAM.
We have a multi-award winning group free to join and open to ALL pupils in school. The group focuses on making real environmental changes to the local area and affecting the global push to a cleaner, more sustainable world.
How do we do this?:
– Grow your own food in our large 20 bed allotment on site
– Join the Bee Keeping team and make your own Honey
– Take part in making award winning videos, TEDx talks, competitions, trips and much more.
– Help plant and manage our onsite woodlands and heritage orchard.
– Travel to exciting international destinations, such as Tanzania, to take part in social and environmental change projects with local people.
