This week the STEM club from Ysgol Clywedog were invited to local business, Air Covers Ltd to meet with the record breaking helicopter pilot, Peter Wilson. Peter has circumnavigated the globe in his helicopter raising awareness of sustainable global issues with Three Journeys Round. He is soon to embark on another record breaking adventure when her circumnavigates South America. They also met with James Ketchell, a gyroscope pilot who will be the first person to travel around the world in a gyroscope in December. The students were allowed to explore the helicopter and ask lots of questions. They were then given a guided tour of Air Covers and shown how design and engineering is used in the business. The final treat of the day was a quick flight around the area! The pupils, aged 11-16 were delighted. Tsvetomir Totev, who also graduated from Ysgol Clywedog year 11 on the same day said ‘I will never forget today, what a leaving present!’ The club will follow Peter’s adventures live when he embarks on the next adventure. This event was a direct result of the STEM club’s entry into the UK Rocketry challenge in April. Staff at the school were delighted that local businesses have shown such involvement and commitment into encouraging the students in their pursuit of STEM education.
